Quail Habitat
- Starter birds can successfully be introduced into the wild, but
ensuring that the birds have good habitat will be key to your success.
Hot temperatures kill quail - When heat exceeds 95F quail must begin to
actively get rid of heat and maintain body temp at a normal level. They
do this by seeking shade, scooped out cups in the soil or other cool
spots in the environment.
Food sources must be available on relatively bare soil. Quail are
poor scratchers and seeds and insects covered by too dense of foliage,
or fallen leaves will not be available. Distance from protective cover also influences food
availability. Quail seldom move far from cover to feed. Thickets that
are relatively small and dense provide refuge from predators as well as
brushy drains and fence rows can serve as resting areas and travel lanes
between fields. Making a variety of habitat available that
will provide some shade from the heat, cover from predators, and source
of food and nesting will help ensure success.
